Sit. Rep. #128: Repeaters, Wear First

1- FM – Ham Operations:
What type of amateur station simultaneously re-transmits the signal of another amateur station on a different channel or frequency?
      Repeater station
What types of amateur stations can automatically re-transmit the signals of other amateur stations?
     Repeater, auxiliary, or space stations
Which of the following describes a linked repeater network?
A network of repeaters where signals received by one repeater and are repeated by all the repeaters

You program your radio so that it receives on the repeater’s transmit frequency and transmits on the repeater’s receive frequency. The difference between the transmit frequency and receive frequency is called the repeater frequency offset.
Which of the following is a common repeater frequency offset in the 2-meter band?
      Plus or minus 600 kHz
What is a common repeater frequency offset in the 70 cm (440Mhz) band?
       Plus or minus 5 MHz

The generic term for these tones is CTCSS – short for “continuous tone-coded squelch system”.
What term describes the use of a sub-audible tone transmitted along with normal voice audio to open the squelch of a receiver?
     CTCSS
Which of the following could be the reason you are unable to access a repeater whose output you can hear?
All of these choices are correct
          • Improper transceiver offset
          • The repeater may require a proper CTCSS tone from your transceiver
          • The repeater may require a proper DCS tone from your transceiver

A Digital Code Squelch (DCS ) is sub-audible and opens the squelch of a repeater when a station is trying to access it.
If a station is not strong enough to keep a repeater’s receiver squelch open, which of the following might allow you to receive the station’s signal?
Listen on the repeater input frequency
What is the most common use of the “reverse split” function of a VHF/UHF transceiver?
Listen on a repeater’s input frequency
What might be the problem if a repeater user says your transmissions are breaking up on voice peaks?
     You are talking too loudly

In addition to knowing how to set the controls of your radio, you need to know the protocol for
making contacts.
What is an appropriate way to call another station on a repeater if you know the other station’s call sign?
Say the station’s call sign, then identify with your call sign
What brief statement indicates that you are listening on a repeater and looking for a contact?
     Your call sign

What term describes an amateur station that is transmitting and receiving on the same frequency?
     Simplex
Why are simplex channels designated in the VHF/UHF band plans?
So that stations within mutual communications range can communicate without tying up a repeater

NOTE: Simplex:  446.000 MHz is the national calling frequency for the 70 cm band.
What is the national calling frequency for FM simplex operations in the 2-meter band?
       146.520 MHz

S: What did the Ground say to the Earthquake?
T: You crack me up.

2- Make sure that you wash and wear every piece of clothing before taking on a trip or a hike.  Why?  You may be allergic to the chemicals (dyes, starches, finishes…) in the fabric.  You also want to make sure that everything works correctly – like the zippers and snaps.  Make sure that everything fits after it is washed.  Get rid of the sales tags.  Do all of this just in case something is wrong and a replacement is required.  What is the lead time for the replacement and another wash and wear cycle before the trip?

2B- Learn how to wash WOOL.

U: Do you have any cheap kittens?
V: No.  All of our kittens go Meow.
